Minerals naturally arranged in bands run through the rock. Oddly enough, this hard, infertile soil is most suitable for grape-growing. Because vines cannot find nutrients and water in the topsoil, they must bury deep into the ground in their search. As a result, the vines also take in minerals and trace elements that notably contribute to the wine’s flavor.
